HOMESTEAD PUBLISHING CO.

Homestead Publishing Co. means weekly community newspapers in Harford County, Maryland - a bustling East Coast community at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Homestead Publishing Co.'s oldest and largest newspaper, The Aegis, has been publishing Harford County's history from its Bel Air, Maryland headquarters since 1856. Its second oldest publication, The Record, has been publishing Upper Bay history since 1868.

Homestead Publishing Co. was formed by the merger of Shield Press and Susquehanna Publishing Co., owners of The Aegis and The Record, respectively, in June 1989. Today it is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Baltimore Sun Co. which is owned by Tribune Company of Chicago. The company is named after the Homestead Publishing Co., the family farm of John D. Worthington Jr. who published The Aegis from 1920 until his death in 1964. His grandson, John D. Worthington IV, is publisher today.

Homestead Publishing Co. is on Hays Street in downtown Bel Air. Its commercial printing operation, based entirely in Bel Air, continues to grow with specialty publications, The Aegis, The Record, Harford Business Ledger, and additional printing work associated with the Baltimore Sun Co.'s purchase of Patuxent Publishing Company in 1998.

Patuxent Publishing Company, based in Columbia, Maryland, publishes 13 community newspapers in Howard and Baltimore counties. Together, Homestead Publishing Co. and Patuxent form the Baltimore Sun Community Newspaper Group.

In addition to The Aegis and The Record, Homestead Publishing Co. publications include The Aegis Weekenders, Harford Business Ledger, Harford (Magazine) and APG News, the only newspaper distributed on the Aberdeen Proving Ground.

The newspapers have a combined readership of 422,000 per week, delivering the news of the day our readers depend on and expect. With more than 151 years of publishing experience, Homestead Publishing Co. is truly Harford County's number one news source.

Together, the Homestead Publishing Co. family of community newspapers cover Harford County, Eastern Baltimore County, Western Cecil County in Maryland and parts of Southern Pennsylvania.

Homestead Publishing Co. serves more than 150 commercial printing customers through our expanded operation in Bel Air, including two presses which run 24 hours a day, five days a week from midnight Sunday to midnight Friday. Stop by the large window on the southeast side of the pressrooms along Thomas Street where you can watch the presses run. A patio outside the window features benches where families can rest their feet and watch a press operation at work. Be sure to check it out on your next trip through downtown Bel Air!

One of the largest private employers in the county, Homestead Publishing Co. has more than 160 employees in various fields from advertising to graphic design to news to administration - and much, much more! Just think of all the different occupations involved in a large-scale newspaper and commercial printing operation! We are proud of our numerous award-winning writers, photographers and graphic artists and the team that backs them up. We're always looking for new talent for our bustling business.
